Diplomat in Respiratory Diseases by National Board New Delhi in 1988 and MD in Medicine from PGI, Chandigarh in 1983, presently Vice Chancellor Atal Medical & Research University, H.P. He is former Director Kalpana Chawla Govt. Medical College, Karnal Haryana, India. He started his career as junior resident teaching fellow of Medicine at PGI, Chandigarh from 1979-82 and rose to the position of Principal and Dean of IGMC Shimla, a prestigious Medical institute of Govt. of Himachal Pradesh.
He has published more than 100 scientific papers; several papers have been presented at National & International Conferences and has attended & participated in several National & International Conferences. He has written several chapter in books related to Pulmonary Medicine. He had organized several scientific activities including CME on Pulmonary Medicine in the 2003 in Shimla co-sponsored by Medical Council of India and organized Zonal Task Force Workshop in RNTCP at Shimla in 2006. He had also organized a CME on Pulmonary Medicine in April 2007 in IGMC, Shimla sponsored by Medical Council of India. He was the Organizing Chairman of NALCCON 2010, the annual conference of Indian Society for study of Lung Cancer held at Shimla. He was the Hon’ble Member of the Committee on Health Matters notified by the Govt. of Himachal Pradesh and has been Member expert Committee University of Delhi for the selection of faculty members of VP Chest Institute, New Delhi. He is elected ex-member of Medical Council of India. He is on the Advisory Board of Indian Journal of Chest Diseases and Allied Sciences. He has been Fellow to University of South Florida, USA and Harvard Medical School Boston, USA. He is also Fellow of College of Chest Physician India and Fellow of International Union against Cancer (UICC) Geneva. He was awarded Shree Krishna Ji Govind and Mrs. Pramella Bai Bhate Memorial Lectureship in Asthma as Bronchitis in 1993 by Association of Physician India and International Technology Transfer fellowship for Thoracic Oncology and worked at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer and Research Institute atthe University of South Florida USA in 1998. Awarded International Union against Cancer (UICC) Fellowship under International Technology Transfer Fellowship to work at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Boston, USA 2004.
He has been bestowed with “Best Educationist Award” for his outstanding achievements on 13th June 2009 by International Institute of Education & Management, New Delhi and awarded “Vidya Rattan Gold Medal Award” on 13th June 2009 by Indian Solidarity Council, New Delhi. He was awarded “Charu Castle Foundation Dev Bhumi Award” for the year 2010-2011 for out standing contribution in Medicine & Social Work in 2011. He has also been nominee for Prime Minister’s Award for excellence in Public Administration 2010. He has been awarded Reverent Teacher award for the year 2012-13 by the Association of Physician of India (H.P. Chapter). Awarded 9th NCCP(I) Lupin Chest Oration of National College of Chest Physician in November 2013. He has been awarded prestigious fellowship of Indian Chest Society (FICS) for his excellent work in the field of Medical Education and Administration. He is also member of European Respiratory Society (ERS).He has been also awarded fellowship of Academy of Pulmonary Sciences (FAPS).
He has been the reviewer for Thorax, European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, Thoracic Cancer,Annals of Thoracic Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Cureus and Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine. He has extensively worked on Epidemiology of Chronic Bronchitis and Asthma and Lung Cancer in the hilly region of Himachal Pradesh. He was first in the state to establish Respiratory and Bronchoscopy Laboratory at IG Medical College, Shimla. He also established the department of Pulmonary Medicine and started PG in the specialty of Pulmonary Medicine at IGMC Shimla. He is founder member of Medical Advisory Council (MAC) under National Medical Commission (NMC) 2020. He is currently also the founder ‘Member of National Medical Commission, India’. He has been bestowed with ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ by Indian Chest Society for his outstanding contribution towards Pulmonary Medicine during NAPCON-2020. He was awarded prestigious ‘Prof. Raman Vishwanathan Memorial Oration’ by National College of Chest Physician of India for the year 2020. He was awarded ‘INDO Asian – Eminent Vice Chancellor Award’ for the Sustained Commitment to Teaching Excellence in Medical Education by Institute of Higher Education & Research (IMRF), India. He has been awarded ‘Fellowship of Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (FAPSR)’Japanin 2021 and ‘Fellowship of Scholar’s Academy and Scientific Society (FSASS)’. He has been awarded the most prestigious ‘Fellowship of National Academic of Medical Sciences India (FAMS)’ in 2021 for outstanding contribution for the advancement of Medical Sciences. He has also been conferred with ‘Bharat Jyoti Award’ for meritorious services, outstanding performance and remarkable role by India International Friendship Society at New Delhi on 12th November, 2021. He has been awarded 6th V.K. Vijayan Oration by Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi for the year 2022. He has also been awarded ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ on 26th November, 2022 by IGMC Alumni Association Chandigarh for his outstanding services in the field of health care. His present mission is to establish a state of the art Medical University for the state of Himachal Pradesh.
